Michael Milburn Foster

2011/02/02-2011/02/26

Speech at the opening reception by art historian Jeff Taylor:

“While other artists are frequently attempting to solve the problem of representing 3 dimensions upon a canvas, which is only two, Michael boldly endeavors to illustrate 4… 4 dimensions. His paintings are motion, not frozen, but rather caught in a cross-fade of color and shade.

His idiosyncratic solutions rely upon employing earlier generations’ techniques juxtaposed to Time, the 4thDimension. He gives an Analytical Cubist’s dissection to the most vital of the all the dancers’ gestures, and the most essential of the wrestler’s muscles.

Each selection flows across an expanse of seconds, delineated by the subtle distinctions of atmospheric perspective now applied to the representation of motion rather than distance.  The paintings move. They jump. With each blink of the eye, and each re-focus. They leap again off the canvas.”

From the Press Release by Marisa Beahm Klein:

‘Born in North Wales,Foster studied art in London in the 1960s and went on to work as a film director for morethan 30 years. Inspired by his motion-picture background, Foster paints distinctive worksthat capture the human form in action, based on video stills and live models. Thisexhibition will display the Budapest-based artist’s bold series of dancers and wrestlerswhose flowing bodies are created through lines, blocks of primary colors and shadedsilhouettes that create the illusion of movement.”
